Life!

“. . . The words that I speak to you are spirit and they are life” John 6:63

It was my daughter’s 7th birthday last year and I got this brain wave. Give indoor plants as the party favours. Something different, something eco-friendly. Hopefully, the kids would like it enough and the mums would not curse me back at home.

It turned out to be a good idea – I hope, at least judging by the smiles on the faces of the exhausted kids. It was a fun party. Who would have thought that a potted plant would teach me so much?

We brought home 3 potted plants. And for the first few weeks, they did look good in their spot in our living room. Red, white and blue.

And then the plants began to die. I was too busy to notice. And so was the rest of my household. We weren’t watering them regularly as before. We had neglected them. We barely even noticed the plants. The leaves dried up completely and they looked terrible. I have never been green fingered and I am pretty certain it’s too late to become one too.

I almost threw the plants out. We were sure there was no life left in them anymore. We had different theories about why the plants died so soon. Maybe the plants didn’t like us? LOL. My house keeper thought it was because no sunlight was reaching them. And of course, we weren’t caring for them properly. Honestly, I meant to throw them out. I just never got around to.

And then we decided to start watering them again. It was more of an experiment. Let’s give the plants some attention and see what happens, the kids and I agreed. We weren’t even very faithful in this. It was more a case of “as often as we remember”. And then one day I looked and behold! Life!

Tiny green leaves were sprouting underneath dead wilted brown ones. I noticed a bud or two. Now this was interesting. Wilted leaves and new buds/new leaf growth on the same plant. Green and brown. Side by side. The green slowly overtaking the brown.

My plants were coming back to life. I had given them up for dead. But no, they were coming back.

In the same vein, we serve a God who is able to bring dead things back to life. His Word is always life! I pray that as we give care to watering our lives with His Word, He will indeed restore and give life to every dead thing in our lives.

Have a life-filled week!

Shalom.
