Ecclesiastes 11:3a

If the clouds are full of rain, they empty themselves on the earth. .

Rain is formed when molecules of water vapour rise from the earth’s surface, as they rise, they condense to form clouds. As more water droplets continue to fuse together, they become too heavy to remain suspended in the air and fall as rain. (Yes, this is a really simplified version, and I hope I have not embarrassed my physics teacher).

This rain formation process reminds me of the saying: ‘what goes up must come down’, as rain is essentially the water molecules that rose up from the earth, got too heavy to stay in the air, and fell down again. Rain nourishes the earth, helping plants and animals survive and thrive. Remember the pictures we see of drought ravaged areas? Skinny animals, malnourished children and dry, cracked soil with no plants. Such is the importance of rain.

If our actions were like the water molecules in the narration above, what kind of rain would fall upon our lives? Would it be enough to nourish and sustain or would we die of starvation while waiting for our clouds to pour out rain?

If we imagined that every good deed, or better still, every act of faith ( for without faith, it is impossible to please God) we carried out would rise like the water molecules, will our clouds ever be full of rain? In other words, are we consistent? Are we faithful? Can God find us reliable to live by faith (in obedience to His word day in, day out)?

There is a blessing and a reward if we are faithful. The clouds will pour out rain, if they are full. Remember the encouragement of Paul; ‘let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up’(Galatians 6:9, NIV).
