Habakkuk 3:17-19

‘The Sovereign Lord is my strength, He makes my feet like the feet of a deer, He enables me to tread on the heights.’(NIV)

I read this and wondered why God would want us to have deer feet. So I did some research. Deer are known to be such good athletes. They have long slender hooves on their feet, and can run at speeds up to 40 miles per hour. Adult deer can leap up to 12 feet high! They are very agile, and such good runners that they rarely miss their step or fall while running. They are able to make sharp turns while running very fast with good precision, even in rocky and difficult terrain.

Like deer’s feet, the Lord will give us strength. He will give us grace and agility, to tread upon the mountains and hills of our lives. In the difficult terrains and the hard places of life, He will make us sure footed and keep us from stumbling, slipping or falling. He will help us navigate the paths of life, showing where and when to turn.

I have carried this picture of a deer running so gracefully and so fast over hills and plains in my head all day. Its helped me understand what God is telling us here, that He will give us strength to make progress! In every area of our lives, like deer’s feet, we will proceed with grace and agility! Praise God.
